It's not easy to compile a list of the Best Films Ever but what you do is list your favorites in order as best you can. There are so many different types of films/movies...some sheer entertainment, some serious drama, others with a heavy message, light and dark comedies, documentaries, Foreign films, musicals, animated, etc. You'll find my list heavy on entertainment films but still quite diverse. You won't find classics such as 2001: A Space Odyssey or Citizen Kane on my list (Citizen Kane maybe when I see it). These are MY personal favorites; every film high in entertainment value. There will be some "guilty pleasures" on this List. These are films that may be classified: low budget, B-pictures, campy, or even cult films, but to me they have entertainment value. I will be happy to explain why any particular one of these films are on my list. My top films have made an emotional impact on me in some way or other, more so than the average film. I've also listed some high-quality Miniseries and Made for TV Movies as they definitely deserve to be included. The first 100 or so are pretty much in order of ranking as I would list them, from there on it varies. My criteria consists of: repeated viewings, longevity (how they stand the test of time), production values (art design, set design, costuming), direction/pacing, script, acting, music score and more. A great movie is one you can appreciate over and over again. Still, an update and revision is needed from time to time as some films weaken in impact over time and need to be removed. Others deserve to be listed higher on the list eventually. Logistically it is near impossible to update and revise the list with any regularity as moving the titles around would take forever. You'll notice more recent films at the end of the list only because I've just viewed them, e.g. "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy" [Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers and The Return of the King] which definitely belong high in the Top 25. Most of these films hold up after repeated viewings so here then is my list of The Best Films ever:

In perusing the first 100 on my list, I noticed many great films, which fall later on the list, deserve to be listed in the Top 100. Blue Lagoon for instance would normally fall way down in order on this list behind such classics as Sahara, Sunset Boulevard and many others. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy belongs in the Top 100 as do a few other newer films. So you can see the latter films are definitely not in order of their greatness!

Loading up the second hundred films I noticed my list was in much need of revision. Certain films I have seen fairly recently; many not for years. You can probably tell that when I first created this list I jotted down whatever great films I could remember; some in order of their genre, type or sequels. I can see a few films that no longer belong on this list, for example: Seven Cities of Gold, Khartoum and Lillies of the Field. They now seem slow-paced, lackluster and/or dated. Time does not help all films!

Obviously there are still some films that belong much higher on this list. Films like: All the President's Men; El Norte; La Cage Aux Folles and so many more. It's virtually impossible to shuffle them around to where they belong. Just consider this a list of great films, with a few terrific B movies thrown in, and it suffices. I have to admit, some movies on this list are there only because they were made or filmed in my home state. Can you guess what state?

I thought that since this part of this List is made up mostly of newer films and quite a few older films that I've recently viewed for the first time ever and some that I've seen before but only recently discovered that they hold up very well after multiple viewings that I should explain a few things about my criteria for this List and why it's now pretty much out of order somewhat. My first rule of criteria is that the film is of good Quality [meaning any combination or inclusion of the following.: well written, directed and acted; including excellent cinematography, costuming, editing and an excellent movie score]. My second rule of criteria is Longevity [how well does it hold up over periods of time and after multiple viewings]. The third rule of criteria is Involvment [depending on its genre, how did it affect my emotions, did it warm my heart, did it cause tears or a lump in the throat, did it scare me, make me laugh, did it make me tense?]. Lesser criteria which affects the credibility of my List, but not to myself, would be favored genres, movies about personal things such as ethnicity (Scotland), movies filmed in, or involving, my home State, favorite actors, hobbies, etc. Finally, the logistics involved in updating this List by shuffling newer films which belong towards the top of the List is too complicated using the availiable prgramming thus leaving it merely a List of great movies, not necessarily in order. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Many more will eventually be added as I view them and, in some cases, remember them. The last few, although viewed many times by myself, were inadvertently left off. Laurel & Hardy's films belong in a special category of their own but could never be omitted from a list of great films. I originally updated the first 50 films on this list in pretty accurate order (in my opinion, of course) so they are/were pretty much where they belong. Moving them around is logistically impossible, so many will be out of any kind of order. Many at the end now probably belong higher up on the List. Also, there may be a few duplicates as it is extremely difficult to monitor such a list. I can recommend enjoyable viewing for all the films included on this list and most are available on DVD and/or video. Your comments would be much appreciated.

A Few words about Pulp Fiction and other violent films. I am not a fan of this genre and while it disturbs me that some people prefer films with gratuitous violence (mad slasher flicks, Scorsese & Tarantino films and even the Coen brothers could be grouped with this bunch), I realize that violence sells and that Hollywood is in business to make money; but at what cost to society? Tarantino, in Pulp Fiction, actually elicits a laugh out of us when a man gets his face shot off with a gun. That really bothers me! On the other hand I can appreciate a well crafted film as much as the next guy. Pulp Fiction was a fascinating, beautifully made film and I did enjoy it. Films like Natural Born Killers, on the other hand, are garbage! It just disturbs me that there's a strong "market" (teens mostly) for this type of film. We need balance and it's not there. Too many films contain violence. How many films can you name with no violence in them? Not even Bambi and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs can be listed. We humans seem to be obsessed by sex and violence and it bothers me even though most of us seem to be well adjusted enough to handle such fare.
